You have been asking how it actually looks like. So I found some video on YT where group of polish players are fighting for city called 'Den'. It is video in RT mode, with lot of action. Group was made almost only from snipers. Anyway, that what we can see is only fighting. Actual game is a lot, lot more complex even if it's still beta and many things wasn't even implemented.

Game mechanics
I've been asked is that strategy game or an FPS. Well actually it can be both! Let's have a look into configuration.
You can choose between Real-Time game, when fast clicking is essential and Turn-Based when tactic is usefull.
Real time looks like this:
You are getting into ecounter!
Running a little bit back, quick aiming.
And finally shoot!
Actually in this ecounter I was a little lucky that molerats first attacked some caravan squad.
Turn-based will show You how much action points You have left in turn. Game is slower but also often way safer. I suggest newcomers to use Turn-Based at begining. It helps a lot.
When You are using option of both game modes at once and Your outdoorsman skill is high enough. You gone get chance to avoid uninteresting and time consuming ecounters. Also You can choose which mode will be better for such fight and get into action.

Character making
Hey!
How about some playing right now huh? I'm gone tell You guys how to make Your own powerfull character. It gone be a little longer post then other but... yeah there is a lot to explain.
First things first! Click on registration.
You will see this.
Do You remember those old good times when you were tagging all three fighting skills in Fallout2? It does not work like this in FOnline!
There are many, many different character bulids and every of them have different role.
Here I want to show you my 'good to learn game' bulid. With this You will probably stay alive for longer then other players.
Explanation:
ST:6 - provides you enough carry weight and allows you to use all small guns without -% modifier
PE:6 - allows you to see enough space
EN:6 - means your health points will raise a little faster after every level up.
CH:3 - You can sell and buy stuff from traders. And also have one NPC companion like slave.
IN:8 - more IN points means more Skill Points used in developing your shooting, outdoorsman or other ability.
AG:10 - If you play in Turn-Based it will helps you a lot. You can move more hex'es, You can shoot more times.
LK:1 - It is fastshooting character, it means critical shoots will be very, very rare. Nah You don't need them!
Fastshoot trait: it means you can't aim at body parts of enemy but Your shoots cost one less Action point!
Skills:
Small guns - easiest to obtain (after melee weapons) and really good for newbies (called here bluesuits).
First aid - believe Me, You don't want bleed to death in middle of desert.
Outdoorsman - It allows you to travel, through World Map faster and safer. Remember to invest here poitns to around 140% of this skill.
Maximum level you can get is 21, that means you can't obtain perks like sniper or slayer.

Getting started
to play the game You have to download and install FOnline client Click here! Second thing You will need two files from orginal Fallout2 game: master.dat and critter.dat
In this step I suggest to find Your own orginal copy of game. If You don't have one, well... we can try getting files from here. Master & Critter
After installation remember to update Your client with updater tool. It can take a while go make yourself a tea.
Last step is to configure game. We need to show directories of critter and master files.
Also check if you have right game server ip and port. It should look like this.
Now You are ready to play. One important thing is that FOnline is not completed yet. It's in early Beta and it still changes. Anyway it is really playable and can be really enjoying.
